Commissioner Urges Children To Preserve Environment
Commissioner for Envi
ronment in Bayelsa State, Mr Iniruo Wills, has urged children to imbibe the habit of preserving the environment for a better tomorrow.
Wills made the remark when the ministry marked 2015 World Environmental Day with the pupils and students of Cedar Court International School in Yenagoa.
He noted that the ministry opted to mark the day with children in order to take its advocacy on environmental consciousness to future leaders.
Iniruo told the children that care for the environment required daily commitment beyond the annual day set aside by the United Nations.
“Our care for the environment is every day, so in effect; the World Environment Day is every day.
“Here in the ministry of environment, our work involves making policies and ensuring that steps are taken to safeguard and preserve the environment in Bayelsa.
And we want young people like you to imbibe the consciousness.
“A safe and clean environment is what everything else depends on, so our environment is our heritage, let us protect it by living our lives in a sustainable manner”, Wills said.
Mr Augustine Ebelege, of Climate Change Unit, said the environment was the reservoir of all resources and should be treated with care.
He said world population was growing at astronomical rate but the resources of nature remained finite.
Ebelege said there was need to consume resources in a sustainable manner to avoid impending catastrophe of depleting the finite resources of nature.
Our correspondent said that officials of various departments and directorates of the ministry took turns to enlighten the pupils and students on the activities of the ministry.
The pupils later recited poems on environment conservation and presented handmade poster on World Environmental Day to the ministry.
