Tax Evasion: Stakeholder Wants NEITI To Expose Oil Bloc Owners
The Nigeria Extractive
Industries Transparency Initiative (NEIT) has been called upon to maTch words with action in exposing or maKING public the names of oil bloc owners and extractive companies that have been evading payment of taxes in the country.
An expert in oil and Gas, Engr Augustine Oruwari made the call in a chat with The Tide correspondent in Port Harcourt on Friday.
Oruwari said the Federal Government had earlier promised to make public the names of those who own oil blocks and had refused to pay the corresponding taxes to the government, thereby short changing the economy of the country.
According to him, the chairman of NEITI, and a legal luminary, Mr Ledum Mittee, had also in a recent capacity building workshop for civil society organizations in Abuja threatened to expose such companies and individuals, but that nothing had been done.
He disclosed that during the workshop, Mittee said he would engage the services of Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) to help expose those companies that are evading payment of taxes in the oil and gas industry in the country.
The expert enjoined NEITI to ensure transparency and objectivity in their operations inorder to justify the confidence reposed on them because the aim of the Federal Government in setting up the body was to recover the billions of naira that had been fraudulently stolen through the evasion.
He further noted that no individual or organization is above the government, and that the earlier they are exposed or asked to cough out some of their stolen or fraudulently appropriated monies to the government, the earlier the economy of the country would improve and it would serve as deterrent evading to others who are in the habit of evading tax.
Oruwari stressed that the earlier the action the better to cushion the current economic debacle of the nation and prayed that NEITI should have the courage of carrying out their responsibility not minding whose ox is gored.
