RSG Donates 50 Vehicles To Security Agencies
Intense political campaigns did not dull activities in
Government House Port Harcourt, last week Almost all officials of government were joggling last minute campaign with governance, including Governor Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, who shared most of his time between APC door-to-door campaign and state programmes.
On Monday, last week, the governor swore-in two commissioners to fill in vacant positions in the State cabinet. Both Isoboye Jack and Engr. ThankGod Ode are to replace former commissioners Dr. Tammy Danagogo and Marshall Uwom who resigned last year from the Ministries of Urban Planning and Housing, respectively.
The governor charged the new commissioners to restore sanity in the building environment.
“Let me congratulate you on your new appointment and to say that our urban development policy must be improved upon. You expected to assert law and order to regulate indiscriminate building of illegal structures and dumping of refuse in our environment”, he said.
Shortly after the swearing-in of the commissioners, Governor Amaechi inaugurated the reconstituted Committee on the Prerogative of Mercy chaired by the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Barrister Nwogu Boms.
Members of the committee include, WS. Pepple, Dr. Jonah Hart, Venerable Jolly Ndubuisi, Barrister Chinemenem Jerome, Mrs. Gloria Atako, and Prof. Amakievi Gabriel.
Later on, the governor addressed pressmen in the State over the activities of Nigeria Police and opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party to arrest and detain its members on trumped-up charges.
According to Governor Amaechi, over 400 members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) are either under the watchlist of police or arrested while others have been killed in controversial circumstances.
The governor said the development has put the police under a compromising stance.
“I have no confidence in Nigeria Police, where the wife of the President posts police commissioner in River State”, he stated.
He challenged the police to live up to their billing as the protector of the citizenry, arguing that the current picture indicates that the APC is now contending with the police and the PDP together in the upcoming polls.
“If the police is removed from the ballot, we will accept the results”, he said.
Last Thursday, local government chairmen under the Association of Local Government of Nigeria (ALGON) led a protest to the State Police Headquarters over the incessant arrests and harassments of its members in the state.
On the same day, Governor Amaechi through the Secretary to the State Government, Mr. George Feyii, donated 50 security patrol vehicles to security agencies in the State to boost security during and after the elections.
On Friday, Governor Amaechi was in the State to participate in a door-to-door campaign in Ikwerre Local Government Area. He challenged people from the area on the need to change the current federal government through their votes, in order to enjoy stable and corrupt-free government.
On Saturday, Governor Amaechi attended the convocation ceremony of the state University of Science and Technology. He said the administration is part of the success story of the university, as he urged students to come out on 28th March and vote for change. About 5,600 convocated at the ceremony.

LP Crisis: Ex-NWC Member Dumps Dumps Abure Faction
Mr Ojukwu, who recently returned to the interim National Working Committee led by Senator Esther Nenadi Usman, noted that the party had 34 elected members in the House of Representatives, eight Senators, and 80 members at the state Houses of Assembly after the 2023 general elections.
“Now we lost all of them,” he said. “I don’t think we have as many as five members in the National Assembly.”
The former national officer of the LP talked to journalists in Abuja and said he chose to join the caretaker committee led by Senator Nenadi-Usman because they are now the officially recognized leaders of the Party.
“I chose to work with the caretaker committee to help save the Labour Party, for the benefit of the party. I also want to use this chance to ask my colleagues at the national, state, and local government levels to come together and help rebuild our party.
“Another election is around the corner. We lost everything we have. They have left to other political parties. So I’ll reach out to all my friends in the other group to get together and work on making this party stronger again.
“The caretaker committee has formed a reconciliation committee. Let’s come together and talk so that we can restore the first opposition political party in Nigeria.”
Mr Ojukwu, who was part of the Julius Abure’s group, said there are no more factions in the LP.
He added, “There is a court ruling, and since it is valid, the right people are in the correct positions.”
He urged Barr Abure and others to drop the legal cases they have filed because they are not helping the party.
“Litigations are killing political parties”, he said. “They’ve seen many political parties disappear because of legal battles, and the Labor Party is losing support every day, which makes me feel sad.”
Mr Ojukwu said he did not think joining the Senator Nenadi-Usman’s NWC was a betrayal of the Abure group, describing himself as “the oxygen” of that faction.
“I’m with this group because of the verdict. But I never betrayed anybody. Rather, I was betrayed,” he added.
