NUC Approves PGD Tax Studies In Varsities
The National Universities Commission (NUC) has approved a post-graduate programme on taxation in Nigerian Universities.
President, Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria, Mr. Mike Anthony Dike, who disclosed this at the weekend in Port Harcourt, also disclosed plans for the establishment of a tax Academy in Nigeria.
Dike, who spoke at the 2015 annual Dinner and Investiture of the Port Harcourt District Society of the institute, called on members to give special attention to capacity development with the view to improving their knowledge on taxation.
The Chartered President, however, decried the dwindling fortunes of the Nigerian economy, and condemned the high level of wastages among the three levels of government in the country.
He said that the institute would soon engage the presidential candidates of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (rtd) and president Goodluck Jonathan on the issue of taxation in Nigeria.
Dike said that the institute will continue to agitate for the provision of a conducive environment for tax practitioners to carry out their functions, and urged the new executive of the Port Harcourt District society to continue to project the institute.
He called for regular training progrmmes to improve the capacity of members.
In his speech, the out gone Chairman of the district, Mr. Clement Akanibo, thanked the National President for his uncommon transformation, noting that in the past five years, the institute has witnessed transformation.
Akanibo also said that his administration, within the last years, had soon the creation of Calabar Uyo and Bayelsa district societies, and charged members to support the new executive enable it succeed.
In a post-inresttiture speech, the new Chairman of the Port Harcourt District Society of the institute, Dr. E.E. Williams listed some of the programmes the new executive will embark on to include the building of a secretariat, provision of a Toyota Hiace bus for mobility of the executive, amongst others.
The event also featured the launching of a book by Dr. E.E. Williams, and award to some distinguished personalities.
