GES, Making Agric Economic Focus -Official
The Director, Farm Input
Support Services Department, Mr Osho Akinbolawa has said that the Growth Enhancement Support (GES) scheme is positioning agriculture as the primary focus of the nation’s economy.
Akinbolawa said this in Abuja on Wednesday at a stakeholders’ workshop on the draft bill for the consolidation of the GES.
The GES is a flagship programme of the Federal Government through which registered farmers access subsidised farm inputs like seeds, fertiliser and agro-chemicals via their mobile phones.
The scheme is also known as e-wallet system.
The scheme has been expanded to include access to heavy farm equipment such as tractors as well as loans, insurance and extension services. Akinbolawa said that under the Fertiliser Market Stabilisation Programme (FMSP) 2.9 million tonnes of fertiliser valued at 1.4 billion dollars with 25 per cent subsidy amounting to 354.2 million dollars was distributed between 1999 and 2010.
The director said GES was targeted at breaking the inefficient distribution of seed and fertiliser and to enable private sector- driven agricultural activities.
He said that about 14.5 million farmers had been registered under the scheme while the ministry was working with the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) to increase the number to 20 million farmers by 2015.
According to him, about 10 million farmers are currently redeeming farm input subsidised by the government across the country. He, however, said there were challenges such as poor GSM network, lack of adequate farmer and public enlightenment, poor coordination between suppliers, agro-dealer and state governments.
Also speaking, the Chief Service Delivery Officer, Cellulant, Owolabi Gbenga, the company that designed the e-wallet, said that the GES was supporting the cashless policy of the Federal Government.
He said in the 2014 wet season farming, 183 Point-of-Sale (POS) machines were given to agro dealers for easy cash transaction between dealers and farmers.

BVN Enrolments Rise 6% To 67.8m In 2025 — NIBSS
The Nigeria Inter-Bank Settlement System (NIBSS) has said that Bank Verification Number (BVN) enrolments rose by 6.8 per cent year-on-year to 67.8 million as at December 2025, up from 63.5 million recorded in the corresponding period of 2024.
In a statement published on its website, NIBSS attributed the growth to stronger policy enforcement by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the expansion of diaspora enrolment initiatives.
NIBSS noted that the expansion reinforces the BVN system’s central role in Nigeria’s financial inclusion drive and digital identity framework.
Another major driver, the statement said, was the rollout of the Non-Resident Bank Verification Number (NRBVN) initiative, which allows Nigerians in the diaspora to obtain a BVN remotely without physical presence in the country.
A five-year analysis by NIBSS showed consistent growth in BVN enrolments, rising from 51.9 million in 2021 to 56.0 million in 2022, 60.1 million in 2023, 63.5 million in 2024 and 67.8 million by December 2025. The steady increase reflects stronger compliance with biometric identity requirements and improved coverage of the national banking identity system.
However, NIBSS noted that BVN enrolments still lag the total number of active bank accounts, which exceeded 320 million as of March 2025.
The gap, it explained, is largely due to multiple bank accounts linked to single BVNs, as well as customers yet to complete enrolment, despite the progress recorded.
