PHEDC Billing Fraud: Consumers Seek RSG’s Intervention
Electricity consumers in
Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital, have called on the state government to rescue them from alleged fraudulent billing by the Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company (PHEDC).
Some residents of Port Harcourt City and its environs who spoke to The Tide last Friday said inspite of the massive cry for improved power supply and logical billing, the situation instead of abating has continued to get worse.
A resident of Woji town in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, Christian Amaechi, said, “it is obvious to all residents of Port Harcourt that distribution and supply is worse than the regime of Power Holding Company of Nigeria, (PHCN). Then, what is the essence of the privatization exercise,” he queried.
Amaechi called on the Rivers State Governor, Rt. Hon. Rotimi Amaechi to come to the rescue of the people by calling PHEDC to order in view of the frustration of social life and economic development of the state by PHEDC.
Another resident, Job Amakalam, who spoke to The Tide after a forum organised by Manufacturers Association of Nigeria, (MAN), Rivers /Bayelsa chapter in Port Harcourt, last Tuesday said PHEDC was being inhuman in its operations in the state and that the situation called for a serious check by the state government.
“Yes, due to one reason or the other, PHEDC is not being able to supply light, but is it also reason able that while the supply drops by the day, the company’s estimated billing should be constant?” he asked.
“Economic laws and equity demand that payments should agree with services rendered,” he said, and noted that it is the responsibility of the government to intervene as the cry is loud otherwise, the government could be accussed of being part of the inhuman relationship. This is not part of the dividends of democracy or aim of power privatization promised us,” he lamented.
A businessman based in Port Harcourt, Pat Eni, said,” in Lagos and some other parts of the country, we read that the power distribution companies are making efforts, acquiring meters for reasonable gauging of the cost of supply to consumers, but in Rivers State, PHEDC doesn’t make such moves. All we hear is pay your bills and the bills are rather increasing while supply is decreasing,” he said.

Power Supply Boost: FG Begins Payment Of N185bn Gas Debt
In the bid to revitalise the gas industry and stabilise power generation, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has authorised the settlement of N185 billion in long-standing debts owed to natural gas producers.
The payment, to be executed through a royalty-offset arrangement, is expected to restore confidence among domestic and international gas suppliers who have long expressed concern about persistent indebtedness in the sector.
According to him, settling the debts is crucial to rebuilding trust between the government and gas producers, many of whom have withheld or slowed new investments due to uncertainty over payments.
Ekpo explained that improved financial stability would help revive upstream activity by accelerating exploration and production, ultimately boosting Nigeria’s gas output adding that Increased gas supply would also boost power generation and ease the long-standing electricity shortages that continue to hinder businesses across the country.
The minister noted that these gains were expected to stimulate broader economic growth, as reliable energy underpins industrialisation, job creation and competitiveness.
In his intervention, Coordinating Director of the Decade of Gas Secretariat, Ed Ubong, said the approved plan to clear gas-to-power debts sends a powerful signal of commitment from the President to address structural weaknesses across the value chain.
“This decision underlines the federal government’s determination to clear legacy liabilities and give gas producers the confidence that supplies to power generation will be honoured. It could unlock stalled projects, revive investor interest and rebuild momentum behind Nigeria’s transition to a gas-driven economy,” Ubong said.
