LG Workers Demand Minimum Wage Arrears
Following the non-pay
ment of the arrears of the 18% Minimum wage by some Councils in Rivers State, staff of Local Government in the state have urged the state President of the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE), Sir Barr. Franklin Ajinwo to prevail on Chairmen of Care-taker Committees of the Councils to defray the arrears.
The Local Government workers who stated this during a state-wide tour of the councils by the State Working Committee of NULGE led by Barr. Ajinwo recently also made other demands, including first 28 days entitlements for newly transferred staff to the various councils, extra duties allowances overtime, staff promotion, office accommodation, burial entitlements to dead staff, absorbiton of certified Primary Health Care workers, furnishing of offices, leave bonus, pension and other basic items required for effective delivery of services.
In a welcome address presented by the Branch Chairman of NULGE in Andoni Local Government Area which was a synopsis of the addresses presented by his counterparts during the two-day visit the workers said through the Chairman, Comrade Apostle E.U.E. Ibikirilasa, “the union is faced by a lot of teething challenges. These include the non-payment of arrears of N18,900 minimum wage, non-payment of the balance of one month 70% consolidated salary and non-payment of motivational allowance/claims to deserving staff”.
“—Non-implementation of the primary health care workers’ promotion, non-payment of transport allowance to staff in lieu of promotion interview logistics, non-payment of death benefit to late staff of council and non-approval for seminars conferences/workshops”.
The workers also listed some achievements recorded within the life-span of the branch executive, which include, input in the conduct of two promotion exercises for junior staff, payment of two month arrears at the 70% consolidated salary, payment of first 28 days to some staff on pasting to Andoni, conclusion of plans for the building of ‘Andoni NULGE house’, renovation of staff canteen and attendance/participation in the burial, marriages, etc. of over 100 staff’.
Sir. Barr. Ajinwo commended the NULGE branches for the achievements recorded and interfaced with the leadership of the council over the workers’ demands and problems enumerated in their address.
Ajinwo later met with the workforce of all the councils visited, thanked them for voting the State Exco at the last election and assured that they would not betray the confidence repose in them.
