Isiokpo FRSC Boss Advocates Safety-On-Wheels
Motorists, including all
road users, have been urged to imbibe the culture of safety on wheels as safer roads means fuller lives.
The Unit Commander, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Isiokpo Unit Command, Ugochukwu Amaechi made this remarks in his address at the flag-off ceremony of the command’s “Ember Months” Road Safety Campaign held at the Igwuruta Motor Park, in Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State, on Thursday.
Amaechi said the “Ember” months had been observed to be a period when there is increased vehicular movement and therefore need to guard against crashes which often result in loss of lives and properties.
According to him, it is the belief of FRSC that there is nothing like accident but crashes, and crashes do not just occure but are caused by reckless drivers.
He noted that more than 70 per cent of the crashes on our roads are caused by reckless drivers who do not adhere to road signs and safety precautions, engage in drunk driving, lack the ability to share the road with all categories of road users, failed to have First-Aid-Box, fire extinguisher, reflective triangles, among others.
The Isiokpo unit commander said the fact that road safety is a shared responsibility cannot be over-emphasised and called on all road users whose activities and vehicles ply the roads to rise up and make the roads safe through their commitments to creating safer roads and fuller lives by making the ember months and other months free from crashes.
“This responsibility lies in our ability to be safety conscious at all times” Amaechi posited and thanked all for their unalloyed support to make the campaign a huge success.
In his address, the Sector Commander, FRSC, Rivers State Sector Command, Sunday Oghenekaro described the theme of this year’s campaign, “Road Safety is a Shared Responsibility: It Depends On You”, as most apt, adding that it simply means that for the roads to be safe, secure and free for smooth motoring all year round, there must be a plan of action, a roadmap to be pursued and ensure execution.
