Mutiny: NLC Opposes Death Sentence
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has called on the leadership of the Armed Forces to commute the death sentence on 12 soldiers found guilty of mutiny to lighter sentences.
The Acting President of the NLC, Chief Promise Adewusi, said in a press conference yesterday that an execution of the 12 soldiers could result in major security problems within the Armed Forces.
A General Court Martial led by Brig. Gen C.C. Okonkwo found the twelve soldiers who allegedly attacked the former General Officer Commanding the 7th Division of the Nigerian Army, Armed Mohammed, guilty of criminal conspiracy, mutiny and attempt to murder and sentenced them to death by firing squad on September 15, 2014.
Adewusi also said that killing the soldiers in accordance with military laws would be counterproductive and not restore discipline in the Armed Forces.
Adewusi said that the application of justice must take into cognisance the fundamental issues that resulted in the situation that led to the mutiny and the consequent trial.
The labour leader stressed that the issues of alleged treachery, non-availability of equipment and others were common to all military formations at operational areas and were not unique to the convicted soldiers.
He said, “If the Court Martial functioned as a mechanical clock, we expect the Army Council or the appropriate authority, whose responsibility it is to review the sentences of this nature, to commute this sentence to a more tolerable or acceptable one.
“Our appeal is hinged on the fact that the brutal execution of the twelve will not restore discipline by fiat.
