New NUJ Complex Ready, Nov
The contractor handling
the building of the ultra-modern Press Centre Complex, of Rivers State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Mr Peter Ajiente, has assured that the building would be completed and ready for commissioning by November this year.
The contractor gave the assurance while speaking with journalists at eth project site during an inspection of the project by the national Executive of the body led by the National President, Alhaji Mohammed Garba, last Wednesday.
The contractor said the project was already at 70 per cent completion, and assured that it would be delivered on schedule.
In his remarks, the National President of the NUJ, Alhaji Mohammed Garba, said he was impressed with the pace of development on the project, and commended the contractors over the progress so far made on the project.
Addressing newsmen, the Rivers State Council Chairman, Mr Opaka Dokubo, thanked the Rivers State Governor, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Amaechi for keeping to his promise to rebuild the press centre.
He said the project, when completed, will impact positively on the development of Rivers journalists, and called on practicing journalists in Rivers State to take advantage of the facilities for capacity building and professional development.
Meanwhile, the Nieria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has lamented the sequence of misfortune that befall the union in recent times following the sudden demise of its former national president, Mr Ndagene Akwu, and a former National Secretary, Mohammed Khalid.
The national President of NUJ, Alhaji Mohammed Garba, who spoke with newsmen when he led a delegation of the National leadership of the union on a condolence visit to the family of late Ndagene Akwu in Port Harcourt, described the two ex-leaders of the body as a great loss, saying the condolence visit to the family was a mark of concern for the commitment of the late Akwu to the development of the union.
Responding on behalf of the late Ndagene Akwu’s family, the elder brother of the deceased, Mr Godfrey Woke Akwu, described his late brother as one who lived a selfless life, and showed a high commitment to the development of journalists and urged the NUJ to immortalize the late Akwu.
In his remarks, the State Council Chairman of NUJ, Mr Opaka Dokubo, thanked the National President for the concern, and prayed for the repose of the soul of the departed colleague.
