15 Boxers In Camp For Commonwealth Games
The Nigeria Boxing Federa
tion (NBF) has selected 15 boxers for the final phase of camping toward the forthcoming Commonwealth Games.
An Assistant Coach of NBF, Jerry Okorodudu, made this known to newsmen last Thursday in Lagos.
The Games would hold in Glasgow, Scotland, from July 23 to August 3.
Okorodudu said that 30 boxers were invited to camp in the first phase a forth-night ago.
He said that the first phase of camping would close on Friday to allow the boxers to prepare for a foreign tour as part of their preparation for the Games.
Okorodudu said the number was reduced to 10 males and five females for the final camping.
“The three-week compact session have impacted on the boxers.
“It has enabled the boxers to shape-up properly into the federation’s plan for the Games.
“The selected boxers are class champions of different national tournaments in the recent past,” the coach said.
According to him, the boxers are in high spirit.
“The boxers are ready to meet up with the mandate of the federation’s President, Kenneth Minimah, and the National Sports Commission to win gold medals,’’ he said.
The Ex-Olympian said that Nigeria’s female boxers had proved in the camp that they might be the turning points.
“I see in them, boxers that can match any one out-there fist to fist.
“With their quick adaptation to the new Amateur International Boxing Association (AIBA) rules, they can easily disarm opponents technically,” Okorodudu said.
He commended the NBF president for his support for the federation toward preparations for the Games.
Okorodudu promised that the boxers would do the country proud at the Games.
Boxing is one of the six sports Nigeria will feature at the Games.
