Cleric Tasks Confab Delegates On Nation’s Interest
The Catholic Archbishop of Lagos, Alfred Martins has called on delegates at the ongoing national conference to put the interest of the nation above tribal, ethnic and religious sentiments.
Martins in his Easter message yesterday, said it would be unfortunate if at the end of the deliberations, the delegates fail to move the nation forward.
According to him, the conference offers a good platform for all segments of the country to dialogue on the way forward to address the lopsided political, social and economic structures of the nation.
“I am happy that the conference is now on, in spite of initial setbacks experienced. I believe it is a window of opportunity for us as a nation to get it right.
“For the past 100 years that we have been living together, so much water has passed under the bridge. We seem not to have gotten it right.
“I want to call on all the delegates to use this opportunity to ensure that we get it right this time.
“There are so many issues to be discussed. There is the issue of insecurity, the right form of government we should practise, resource control, equality and justice,
“Our hope is that our representatives there would work for the good of Nigerians,” he said.
While wishing Nigerians a happy Easter celebration, Martins condemned the spate of ritual killings in the country and called on all to be prayerful and alert at all times.
“In this season when we celebrate the risen Lord, I want to call on all Nigerians not to relent in their prayers for peace in our country.
“There is no doubt that perpetrators of evil activities are on the prowl, but we should not be discouraged, rather, we should move closer to Jesus for he alone can protect us from the snares of the evil ones.
Also, Bishop Emeritus, Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion) Most Rev. Adebola Ademowo condemned the rising cases of kidnapping, ritual killings and rape in the country.
“The cry of souls through the excruciating agony from incidents claiming innocent lives in our country is too loud to ignore.
“Life is sacrosanct, the maiming, the destruction and bloodshed are not justifiable,” Ademowo said.
Ademowo urged the leaders to pray for wisdom in handling the affairs of the nation.
“It is time for our leaders to demonstrate the fear of God and consult Him in the affairs of the nation.
“Our leaders should pray for wisdom on the affairs of the nation, which requires the combination of prayers and expertise of technocrats and committed patriots.
The cleric urged the Federal Government to address the problem of unemployment in the country, saying that it was painful that a large percentage of citizens, especially young graduates, were unemployed.
“The vices can be curbed if there is collaboration between government and the private sector to provide employment.
