Rivers To Demand Resource Control At National Conference
Rivers State is attending the on-going National Conference in Abuja, armed with an agenda on fiscal federalism and resource control, which the state believes will improve its lot and cement the unity of the nation.
Rivers State will canvass a position that under an indissoluble new Nigeria, fiscal federalism which paved way for justice, equity and fairness should be enthroned and states should be allowed to control their resources, so that no section of the country will feel marginalised or cheated.
Answering questions from The Tide on the floor of the conference, shortly after it adjourned last Tuesday, a delegate from the state, Chief Sampson Agbaru said this is the way to go.
Agbaru, who was also a state delegate to the six-month defunct National Political Reform Conference of ex-president Olusegun Obasanjo in 2005, which recommendations were not implemented said, “…I believe we can live together (as a nation) but I don’t believe in the neglect of a section; everybody (delegates) should go to this conference to make it different (from the 2005 conference).Resource control: Not just saying, resource control, we will articulate our view on this and it will be beneficial to all. We want true federalism, fiscal federalism – this is part of our agenda at this conference’’.
Asked if the state agenda does not embrace ‘local government autonomy’, Agbaru, former secretary to the state government snapped, “autonomy, as in becoming a federating unit? I don’t think so… (but) the power should devolve downwards.
The former president of Ogbakor Ikwere assured that they will not disappoint Rivers people at the conference, as they’re aware that Rivers people expect that their voices will be heard and that the tension between the state and the Federal Government will abate to pave way for developmental projects by the federal authorities.
His words: “They (Rivers people) expect that our voices should be heard; they expect that the tension will now come down and Federal Government will give us what we want, then the people will enjoy. And whatever we need, whatever is our right will be given to us. I’m glad to say that just last week, Federal Government approved our water scheme; others would be approved – all the things we need, we’ll get it by approaching our son (President Goodluck Jonathan)”.
