Writers As Servants Of Truth, Freedom
The burden of trans
mitting the ideals and values of any society from one generation to another rests on the shoulders of writers. Writers are by their calling morally concerned and functionally disposed to engage themselves in the task of renewal and re-ordering of societies. Through conscientious appeals, they apply the basic truths that constitute the mobility of science; then service of truth and freedom. Writers are unusual creations; they live in dual operations and create two existing worlds for their renditions.
The physical world is the medium through which the artistic world is transmitted, while the artistic world is a build up of creativities and postulations of the artistic mind. As critics, writers are never satisfied with happenings around their environment. They are volunteers who protest the ills of the society in master pieces and modicums that rouse societal sensitivities. Their scathing views sometimes pitch them against the big and mighty, while they are mostly celebrated by the masses.
Creative writers replicate real life situations in plays and novels, films and other mediums of artistic delivery, but most importantly, every work of art translates through writing after conception of the artistic ideas. The creative mind is not gagged. Events and history have shown that authors outline their physical existence. Years after their physical departure, their artistic works speak for them. Their ideas are engaged and assimilated by their devoted readers, and models and heroes are made through such mode of artistic delivery.
Apart from topical writing which broaches its torrents and concentrations on specialisation and expertise, the world of creative writing is limitless. It entails a wide prospect of exploration and exercise of the literary mind. It is an exquisite form of liberty. It is the figurative comparison of our link with the supernatural.
Our creator, the Almighty God is portrayed as a master craft artist overseeing the biggest platform for creative deliveries, with divine discretion and absolute control and mastery of his awful works. Our link with this divine mastery avails us the natural disposition to exhibit creative abilities and writers are the best custodians of these lavish talents. Genuine writers do not point, or aim to advertise a single compendium of mediated knowledge nor his reflections mere over flow of emotions recollected in tranquility. The writers’ motive is to contribute to the fulfillment of man’s eternal purpose which is to live a life of fulfillment through emancipation from all fetters, tatter and wreck.
Truth, they say is violated by falsehood, but outraged by silence. The writer believes that the only way to rescue truth from outraged is to conventionalise in artistic form, a reflective world for humanity to spot their omission and commission. By so doing, man leaps from one stage of self awareness and development to another with a deeper sense of conviction. The use of coercive measures bereft of ideological stance to compel man against his wish negates the supremacy of the intellect and gags his creative abilities.
Who then should be more concerned about the society than the writer with the defence of liberty and free enquiry! Through artistic projection, he reminds men of their humanity and the promise of their creativity. He reaches out into the ugliness of the world for vagrant beauty and encapsulates them into concrete reality through a dispassionate appeal to man’s heart. The writer is more concerned about the imperatives of desired changes in his society. Through his craftsmanship, he animates and sharpens the sensibilities of man from drooping into a stuffy mold of himself. To create a desiring effect on the society, good writing must always profess and in view, and language must suit the thought, and accord with the pitch of emotion felt by the writer. He must always be in earnest in presenting his objective appraisal of society.
As the mirror of the society, writers should channel their creative energies towards shaping the society; such works of arts must be portraits of themselves and add to the vision of life. Although writers are sometimes influenced by the trapping of power, and lucre, they must not allow truth to be sacrificed, or integrity compromised in the face of pervasive material influence. He must defend the course of truth at all times and strive to restore the dignity of man through his ceaseless effort.
He must be dynamic and strategic in his approach to arrest the distorted state of man’s heart which is vulnerable to other forms of invectives capable of putting down the temple of his being. He must apply a great sense of wit and sarcasm to light up the human mind to see beyond the shadows of prejudice and hate. Without knowledge acquisition and distillation, human being is bound to be a savage bore and therefore subjected to mental disability and docility. To avert these warped realities, the writer must dig into his repertoire of creative reflexes and educate the mind of man from the shackles of ignorance and deprivation. This should be done in a plausible, constructive and critical appeal that will pierce the innermost shell of the human heart and make him appreciate the essence of his being.
He must help man to re-awaken to life through purpose by broadening his knowledge through articulate presentation of facts that have bearing on the people. He must write about the good and the bad, the ecstasy, the remorse, and sorrow. He must tell the truth about his time and celebrate the adventures of life among masterpiece, as noble deeds bear in them the seed of their own justifications.
