Rivers CP Meets Political Parties …Draws New Roadmap For Peace

Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs, Prof. Viola Onwuliri (left) and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Denmark, Holger Nielsen, at a meeting in Addis Ababa during the 22nd ordinary session of the African Union, recently.
The Rivers State Commissioner of Police, Mr Johnson Tunde Ogunsakin says the command was formulating new strategies that will effectively accommodate the interest of all without undermining the rights of the citizens or compromising the peace, order, security and safety of lives and property in the state.
Ogunsakin disclosed this yesterday during a meeting he held with leaders of the various political parties in the state at the Police Officers Mess, Forces Avenue, Old GRA, Port Harcourt.
The police boss said that the formulation of a new strategy was important because political activities must be effectively managed in order not to endanger the peace, adding that he would not compromise anything that would cause breach of public peace, trigger riotous conduct and any act likely to cause a break-down of law and order in the state.
According to him, “it is on the strength of this that I am soliciting your support and cooperation in ensuring lasting peace and security in the state. We shall, on our part, be impartial, neutral, and non-partisan as I would deploy my expertise to manage the affairs of the state police command in the best possible professional manner.
“It is my conviction that together, we shall deliver qualitative policing services to the government and people of the state”, he said.
Some of the party leaders and representatives, who spoke during the meeting urged the police not to be partisan, but should give equal opportunity to the parties irrespective of their names.
In his contribution, the state Interim Chairman of All Progressive Congress (APC), Chief Ibiamu Ikanya, while appealing to the police commissioner to display professionalism and fairness, said thugs who disrupt political activities should be prosecuted, no matter their political platform and affiliation.
Also speaking, the state Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Bro Felix Obuah urged the police to protect the interest of Rivers people and not political parties, assuring the readiness of the political parties to work with the police to ensure peace, maintenance of law and order.
