Why We Back Amaechi’s Defection To APC – Peterside
The member representing Andoni, Opobo/Nkoro Federal Constituency in the National Assembly, Hon. Dakuku Peterside, says Rivers people are satisfied with the defection of Governor Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi to All Progressives Congress (APC) and will continue to back him as the people had continuously suffered expropriation and marginalisation from the Jonathan administration.
Peterside who was speaking in an interview with newsmen recently said Governor Amaechi took the bold step to protect the collective interest of Rivers people.
According to him, “the government at the centre has denied us even the least benefit for our modest contributions and does nothing to advance our development in anyway.”
He stated that both the Federal government and the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) had been unfair to Rivers State as the rights and entitlements of Rivers people were trampled upon under a PDP-led government at the centre.
He said, “some are in politics to make as much personal wealth as possible through the instrumentality of power, others are in government to serve the people and transform their socio-economic status and yet others went into government to cause confusion and derive joy in the confusion.
“These different reasons determine the choices we make. By now it is obvious to the least discerning mind that the likes of Governor Amaechi are in power and politics for the higher interest of the people”
“This compelling interest will not allow the wealth of Rivers people to be expropriated under his watch. He cannot look the other way when the rights and entitlements of the citizens are trampled upon and the people treated as it they do not matter:, he added.
Hon. Peterside who is also the Chairman, House Committee on Petroleum Downstream noted that Rivers people were solidly behind Governor Amaechi in his quest to redress the injustice perpetrated against them by the federal government, saying “2015 will show clearly that our people can no longer be taken for granted.”
The Federal lawmaker further stated that the next governor of Rivers State would be chosen by God through Rivers people and not by the Nigerian police or any single individual.
