RSG Redeems N25m Pledge On Prof Ake Chair
Rivers State Government has redeemed its pledge of establishing a professorial chair in honour of late Prof Claude Ake with the presentation of N25 million cheque to the University of Port Harcourt .
The cheque was presented by the Chairman of Prof Ake’s Memorial Lecture and Commissioner for Budget and Economic Planning in the state, Mr. Gogo Levi Charles, together with the Secretary of the body, Commissioner for Power Augustine Wokocha at the Choba Campus of the university.
Mr .Charles said the idea behind the endowment was to immortalize the late professor of Political Economy, who made huge impact on global academic stage.
The commissioner, who represented Governor Chibuike Amaechi, maintained that instituting the chair would provide a body of knowledge that would aid the growth of society, adding that late Prof. Ake was one of the first scholars who championed diversification of the economy in the country.
He pledged to work together with University of Port Harcourt to ensure that the dream of the late university don and expert in Political Economy did not die.
Earlier, Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof Joseph Ajienka thanked the state Government for the gesture, and assured that the institution’s management will work with the Centre for Advanced Social Science to transform the place to an executive business school that will help train civil servants, top government officials and interested members of the public.
Prof Ajienka maintained that the centre will also act as a research and consulting centre where government briefs will be written, while maintaining that the school will work with government to project the ideals of Prof Ake.
