Youth Summit Lists Strategies For Campus Success
The carelessness
attatched to student’s Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) from the commencement of university education has been blamed for failures on Nigerian campuses.
Speaking during a Youth Summit at Everygeen plaza in Port Harcourt, last week the Chief Executive/Managing Director of Gospel Warehouse, Mr Victor Okoro, said that the mistakes made in the first year most times affect the final grade of the student during graduation.
Okoro, who is the facilitator of the annual/maiden youth students noted the need for sutents to set their priorities and the grade they want to graduate with right before entering the campus to avoid distractions that may affect their final performance.
He called on students to learn how to calculate their CGPA, adding that time well managed is life well managed as “absence from lectures marks the beginning of students’ failure on campus.”
Speaking on a topic, “Winning on campus,” he noted that what makes the difference in a man’s life is the amount and the size of problem the man can solve, adding that for one to be relevant in solving people’s problems, he or she has to be well equipped through education.
He warned against drugs, prostitution and bad reading culture that have distracted some students from pursing their set targets.
Also speaking, Mrs Gloria Ken-Idehen noted the danger posed by high dependence on oil by the country adding that there is serious need to diversify the economy.
She noted the need for Nigerian students to turn the disaster faced by the country to opportunities which she said differentiates between the youths that develop themselves and those who wait for opportunities.
Ken-Idehen called on students to make use of the vast resources provided by information and communication Technology (ICT), adding,” The internet and mobile phones can help students develop themselves to be self-reliant.
Pastor Debby Jones of Jabase House advised students to discipline themselves and avoid any anti-social vice that would lead to destiny destruction. She warned teenage girls to say no to sex and stand against men that want to distract them from their educational pursuit, adding that God would always help those who are willing to trust Him.
The National Director, Welfare, Rivers State Youth Federation, Dickson Brown said the problem of Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) is that they started with ex-millitants, emphasising on the need for Christian youths to take their places and get to the next level as future leaders.
The president of National Union of Ijaw Students, Rivers State University of Science and Technology chapter, Mission Diepreye called on the youths to know that whatever they do will affect the country and their generation at large.
