RVHA: Uchendu Justifies NASS Position
The lawmaker representing Ikwerre/Emohua Constituency in the House of Representatives, Chief Andrew Uchendu, has justified the intervention of the National Assembly in what he described as the show of shame that took place at the chambers of the Rivers State House of Assembly last Tuesday.
In an interview with The Tide at the Port Harcourt International Airport,Omagwa, Thursday, Chief Uchendu, said the decision of the National Assembly particularly the House of Representatives was in the best interest of Rivers State.
He said Rivers State is so important to the country that a breakdown of law and order in the state affects the nation’s economy negatively, hence their involvement.
“We cannot fold our hands and allow anti-democratic forces to continue to take control of our body politics to the extent of enthroning anarchy in Rivers State”, Chief Uchendu said, emphasizing that the decision of the House was in the overall interest of the state and the nation at large.
Hon. Uchendu, who was the architect of the motion under matters of urgent public importance at the floor of the Federal House, debunked insinuation of usurpation of powers of the state lawmakers saying the 1999 constitution empowers the House to intervene when there is a crisis.
According to him, those criticizing the decision of the National Assembly are merely displaying gross political naivety because section II, subsection (4) of the 1999 Nigerian Constitution as amended, gives the power to the House to intervene under such circumstances.
He explained that if the primary purpose of lawmaking in the state Assembly is forestalled, the National Assembly can rightfully take over such functions as prescribed.
On the role of the police in the unfortunate incident, Chief Uchendu said, “we gathered that the House wrote to the state police command requesting for adequate security to enable them carry out House business but from the activities of the Police Commissioner, the is obvious that he has taken side rather than perform his legitimate duty”.
