MWUN Inaugurates Taskforce On Irregularities
In a bid to curb insecurity and other irregularities on our waterways, Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) in Rivers State has set up a taskforce to checkmate such activities that will endanger maritime activities.
The Chairman of the Union, Comrade Jonah Jumbo dropped this hint in a chat with our correspondent at the union’s secretariat in Port Harcourt recently.
Comrade Jumbo said the taskforce was set up to look into illegal certification of vessels, illegal crewing, unsafe practices and security on our waterways, pointing out that they would also ensure that people working on board vessels, crafts, Tug boats, dredgers, barges and other sea going vessels were registered and certified seafarers.
He hinted that the taskforce would ensure that genuine marine operators are certified as well as all marine equipment operators operating within our waterways, and called on all to comply with the taskforce as they are going to operate in conjunction with the security agents for possible prosecution.
According to him, people and companies that falls under this category have been advised to come and register with the union and pay up their dues and purchase stickers to identify the genuine operators within our waterways.
“Jetty operators have also been advised to register because some illegal jetties in the state were being used to perpetrate criminal activities like bunkering”, he said, adding that those whose certificates are invalidated should go and renew them or have themselves to blame.
In his remarks, the State Sea Taskforce chairman, Comrade Ibiebele Emmanuel assured to carry out his assignment diligently accordingly to the dictate of the union, and thanked the union for the appointment.
Comrade Emmanuel said his committee would ascertain that all marine equipment operators and others operating within our waterways purchase maritime stickers to ensure genuine operators, registered and certified by the union as failures would have their vessels impounded and handed over to the security agents for prosecution.
He also warned mining agents to pass through the union or NIMASA for verification of documents before sending people on board, and that any one with fake certificate would face prosecution.

Blue Economy: Minister Seeks Lifeline In Blue Bond Amid Budget Squeeze

Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy is seeking new funding to implement its ambitious 10-year policy, with officials acknowledging that public funding is insufficient for the scale of transformation envisioned.
Adegboyega Oyetola, said finance is the “lever that will attract long-term and progressive capital critical” and determine whether the ministry’s goals take off.
“Resources we currently receive from the national budget are grossly inadequate compared to the enormous responsibility before the ministry and sector,” he warned.
He described public funding not as charity but as “seed capital” that would unlock private investment adding that without it, Nigeria risks falling behind its neighbours while billions of naira continue to leak abroad through freight payments on foreign vessels.
He said “We have N24.6 trillion in pension assets, with 5 percent set aside for sustainability, including blue and green bonds,” he told stakeholders. “Each time green bonds have been issued, they have been oversubscribed. The money is there. The question is, how do you then get this money?”
The NGX reckons that once incorporated into the national budget, the Debt Management Office could issue the bonds, attracting both domestic pension funds and international investors.
Yet even as officials push for creative financing, Oloruntola stressed that the first step remains legislative.
“Even the most innovative financial tools and private investments require a solid public funding base to thrive.
It would be noted that with government funding inadequate, the ministry and capital market operators see bonds as alternative financing.
