FAAN Tasks Staff On Work Attitude
The Managing Director of Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) Mr. George Uriesi has challenged staff of the organisation to change their work attitude in line with the reforms taking place in the aviation industry.
Mr Uriesi stated this Friday while commissioning some projects initiated and completed by the management of the Port Harcourt International Airport to improve the working environment for the airport users.
The managing Director who lauded the Regional General Manager, Mrs Ebele Okoye for her achievements within a short time in office, describing her as a resourceful person with a passion to deliver services to people.
He explained that if the workers must put in their best, the working environment must be enhanced, noting that the Port Harcourt regional general manager, had taken a bold step to bring sanity to Port Harcourt International Airport Omagwa.
The managing Director blamed the poor state of the nation’s airports before now to loss of focus but expressed happiness that the reforms in the nation’s aviation sector is targeted at making the industry compete favourably with others in the world.
According to him, “as part of repositioning the industry, workers are being motivated to generate high inputs by purchasing cars for level 15 officers to make them feel the drive and to encourage others”.
Mr. Uriesi remarked that having commissioned guest house, conference hall and car park, there is need to improve the status of staff quarters in keeping with the staff incentive drive of his leadership.
Earlier, the Regional General manager, Mrs Ebele Okoye, said the mantle of leadership of the Port Harcourt Airport fell on her on October 2012, and she decided to confront the challenge frontally with focus determination to make a difference.
Mrs Okoye explained that she keyed into President Goodluck Jonathan’s transformation agenda of using the Aviation industry as one of the yardsticks to measure his administration’s achievements.
She disclosed that the greatest challenge on assumption of duty was the issue of movement out of the Terminal Building to give room for the contractor to work without hindrance.
The Regional General manager highlighted some of her achievements which include repair of fire link road pavements, re-roofing of administrative block, repair of administrative building, remodeling of conference room, construction of protocol car park, provision and installation of emergency escape stair for the control Tower among others.
Mrs Okoye thanked the Aviation Minister for her uncommon zeal to give unprecedented facelift to the country’s airport facilities and the Federal Aviation Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) leadership hinged on three- prong approach of remodeling, restructuring, profitability and sustainability.

Aviation Professionals Want Agencies Boards’ Inauguration
As a measure to curb corruption and restore accountability, the Association of Nigeria Aviation Professionals (ANAP), has called on the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, to push for the urgent formation and inauguration of governing boards for all other aviation agencies.
ANAP’s Secretary General, AbdulRasaq Saidu, made this call at the weekend when interacting with aviation correspondents, in reaction to recent inauguration of Board of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN).
Keyamo had recently inaugurated the FAAN board, more than six months after its members were appointed by President Bola Tinubu, where Dr. Umar Ganduje was named Board Chairman, with FAAN’s Managing Director, Olubunmi Kuku, as the Vice Chairman.
Other board members include representatives from the Ministries of Justice, Defence, Tourism, and Aviation, as well as professionals from the Nigerian College of Aviation Technology, and FAAN’s legal department.
The ANAP scribe there urged the aviation Minister not to stop at FAAN but to ensure that all aviation parastatals are given functional boards to restore order and credibility to the sector.
He, however, commended Keyamo for recently inaugurating the board of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria but stressed that more needed to be done.
Saidu also warned that the continued delay in constituting boards for other aviation agencies creates room for unchecked abuses, including illegal contracts, fraudulent employment practices, and mismanagement.
“The absence of governing boards violates the enabling Acts that established these agencies. Only properly constituted boards can enforce discipline, ensure due process in decision-making, and provide oversight to prevent corruption”, Saidu said.
He emphasised that the aviation unions, including ANAP, have consistently raised concerns about poor governance and lack of transparency within the aviation system.
He called on President Bola Tinubu to act swiftly by appointing board members for all relevant agencies, in the interest of fairness and aviation safety.
Saidu also tackled the former Minister of Aviation, Senator Hadi Sirika, for failing to inaugurate any boards during his eight-year tenure, despite appointments being made by former President Muhammadu Buhari.
“ANAP raised the alarm several times under Sirika’s leadership, but nothing changed. That lapse has continued under the current administration, and it must be addressed now”, Saidu stated.
