Filty Street Worries Sanitation Authority
The Rivers State Environmental Sanitation Authority (RSESA) has expressed worry over the poor State of Bishop Okoye Street at Mile 3, Port Harcourt local government council of the State.
The Sole Administrator of the authority, Mr Ade Adeogun who was visibly overwhelmed by the state of the Street during a special sanitation exercise of the area last Friday expressed shock at the display of articles by traders on filthy road.
He explained that the Ntawoba Creek was not a big problem apart from the fact that it was not wide enough even as he condemned the traders for dropping waste in drains rather than at the approved dump sites.
He said major drainages at Mile 3 market area meant to feed Ikwerre Road were being worked upon to enable smooth flow of water.
At the Abuja By-pass area occupied by plumbers, building materials and goat sellers among others, the sanitation boss said the major problem remained the indiscriminate dumping of waste into the drains which periodic evacuation of waste by the traders could not address.
However, Mr Captain Ozomena Onu who identified himself as the chairman of Nkanu Butchers Association said his association has a task force saddled with the proper cleaning of the entire area.
He said one of his major challenges was non-compliance by some members which prompted him to get in touch with the sanitation authority and the State Ministry of Health.
Mr Onu also revealed that most of the dirt that found their way into his area was from Bishop Okoye Street and other adjoining Streets.
“Most of the refuse do not originate from us as they come all the way from Bishop Okoye Street and beyond the Streets that make up Mile 3 area,” he said.
On efforts being put in place to see to the success of his association in their sanitation Campaign Drive, Mr Onu said he personally donated the sum of N300,000 to ensure the success of the campaign. “On my own, I have brought out N300,000 to ensure that this work goes on smoothly,” he said.
