Consultant Tasks FG On Job Creation
A Consultant Psychologist, Prof. Peter Ebigbo, last Saturday, urged the Federal Government to open up the nation’s economy and create more jobs for the youth to reduce crime.
Ebigbo, a Clinical Psychologist at College of Medicine, University of Nigeria, Enugu Campus, made the appeal in a lecture he delivered in Lagos at the 10th anniversary of the Frontline International.
Ebigbo spoke on “Optimal Utilisation of the Potential in the Shipping Sector of Nigeria’s Economy”.
The don commended the ongoing reforms in the shipping sector which, he said, was driving 95 per cent of the Nigerian economy.
He hoped that the reforms would strengthen the sector, develop the economy and provide more employment opportunities.
The don urged the government to compel the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency to hasten creation of a large pool of Nigerian seafarers.
He said that this would enable Nigeria to meet local demand for seafarers as well as contribute to the manpower needs of the international shipping community.
Ebigbo said that there was the need to further develop the shipping sector to enable it to compete favourably with those of advanced countries.
He called on the government to improve the nation’s export profile and empower small scale industries as well as provide stable power supply to boost economic growth.
“There is need to apply global standards to shape the future of the maritime industry and adapt global port security best practices to suit Nigeria,’’ Ebigbo said.
The General Secretary of the Shippers Association, Lagos, Mr Jonathan Nicol, said that manmade problems were responsible for the non achievement of the 48 hours cargo clearance in Nigerian ports.
He, however, commended the Ports and Terminal MultiService Ltd. of the Nigeria Customs Service for improved operations.
