Board Tasks Rivers Port On Facilities
The Management of Rivers Port had been tasked to upgrade its facilities in order to attract importers in doing transformation at the Port.
The Board Chairman of Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Chief Tony Anenih made the call during a utility visit to the Port recently.
Chief Anenih, who was represented by Senator Florence Ita Giwa said they should ensure modern ways of doing business in Rivers Port, which is one of the oldest Ports in the country.
According to him, “Try and embrace new technological innovation in doing business”, adding that the Federal Government reform agenda of President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan must impact on the Port to facilitate its growth from strength to strength.
The Board Chairman, said they were in Port Harcourt to have a first hand knowledge about the operations of the Port and expressed satisfaction for their dodged efforts in improving the port facilities.
He however congratulated the management and staff of the Port for attaining the centenary age of 100 years when the Port was commissioned for operation by the colonial masters.
Earlier, the Manager, Rivers Ports, Mrs Carolyn Akum Ufere said that facilities within the control of the Port had improved tremendously and expressed satisfaction with the improved security situation at the Port.
Mrs Ufere, who was represented by the Traffic Manager of the Port, Mrs Eunice Ezeoke disclosed that maintenance and upgrading of the Port common user facilities have commenced, stressing that it would encourage effective implementation of the ‘Bus-in-bus-out-rules’, as well as enhanced positive engagement with dockworkers and other labour unions in the Port.
She reiterated that security in the Port had been quite impressive in recent times, adding that the Port is currently operating on ISPC Code level two of repairing some vessels like P.C. Umuahia as well as upgrading M T Otuoke and MT Balasa to ensure their optimum utilisation in the Port.
The Rivers Port Manager thanked the Board members for their visit to have a first hand knowledge of the Port, describing their visit as timely and a move towards given the Port sense of belonging.
