LG Boss Constitutes Committee On Water Pollution
Following cases of underground water pollution in Okrika Local Government Area of Rivers State, the chairman of the council, Hon Tamuno Williams, has constituted a committee to study and ascertain the level of contamination by crude oil.
Mr Williams stated this, recently in Okrika when he played host to a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), Journalists Against Disaster and Accidents (JADA) that was in the area on a fact finding mission.
The chairman said the activities of oil producing companies in the area had polluted the area, affecting underground water, stressing that drilling of boreholes could no longer guarantee good drinking water.
He disclosed that the council was awaiting the advice of the technical committee headed by Prof. Kingdom Abam before taking the next step on the issue, and thanked the group for identifying with the people.
The council boss assured the group of his council’s preparedness to partner with it in the task of assisting disaster victims in the State and urged the journalists to create adequate publicity on the issue to draw attention to their plight.
Earlier, the State Coordinator of the group, Deacon Ruskin Amadi, said the body was in Okrika to assess the veracity of the information about environmental pollution particularly the underground water.
He said the organisation would partner with the council and other well-meaning groups to generate necessary attention that would provide succour to the affected people while soliciting the coorperation of the council.
