Social Networking And Teenagers
There are many potentials derivable from social networking sites by the teenagers that use them. Social networking invoice using websites to share information with others and connect with them by creating a profile that may include a personal web page and a blog. Social networking sites allow users to add friends, send messages and comment on other’s profile pages.
It is also one of the most popular internet pew internet project suggests that 93% of Nigerians use social networking. Popular social networking site is my space, my space is the most popular and dominate social network among teens, used by 85 per cent of teenagers.
My space allows users almost unlimited flexibility to create and customize their profile pages, share their own content or that of others including music, videos and writing. The next popular social networking site is Facebook which is used by teens. Facebook puts a greater emphasises on actually knowing the people that you connect with. Other social networks used by teenagers include xanga, yahoo & Bebo.
Apart from the social benefits, social networking sites can be used to document school research, promote artistic talents and experiment with other forms of content creation. They provide a way to interact with others who share the same interest and to get constructive feedback on ongoing projects.
Along side with these benefits come some tests. Most social networking sites are open to all, especially my space, which means that teens could be exposed to harassment, bullying or sexual advances. Cyber bullying and harassment are most often perpetrated and bend to happen most to girls who have a strong online presence.
It may take several forms like publicising private instant messages, text messages or emails, posting photos that will cause embarrassment and spreading rumours. Social networking can have its benefits and it pitfalls. For instance your reputation and your friendship.
Guarding your reputation means being careful not to give others valid reason to think bad of you. For example how would you feel if because of your own carelessness your car was wrecked in an accident? Something similar can happen to your reputation on a social network with one thoughtless picture or post your reputation can be ruined. Consider how your reputation might be affected by posting pictures that accentuate your bodies can damage your reputation, comments, crude languages, immoral topics creep into discussion in social network can damage ones reputation. Sometimes people post comments with bad words or double meanings even though you are not the one who say it, it reflects poorly on you because it’s your page.
Your friendship, social networking allows you to reconnect with people from your past, but sometimes those people are best left in the past set boundaries as to whom you will invite or accept as a friend, just as you would off-line.
Many teenagers want to be perceived as popular, so they will be more willing to accept friends who are strangers or who are unprincipled. There is a popular parlance that says show me your friend and I will tell you who you are.
The anoymity of some social networking sites makes it easy for people to target young teens and engage them in harmful conversations it is easy for predators to pose as teens and lure children into harmful real-world contact as well.
Another risk is identify theft which can occur when teens share too many information about their selves like their name, date of birth and location. Many youth’s don’t understand the consequences of putting too much information on-line indicating where they live, where they attend school or when they are at home or away could compromise the safety of their family.
It is up to parents to make sure their teens are safe when using social network. Some social networking safety that can adopted by teens are as follows. Use an alias. Don’t give out personal information to people you don’t know they claim to be, end any communication that makes. Don’t assume that people are who they claim to be you uncomfortable.
