Rivers Inaugurates Peer Review Mechanism Steering Committee
Rivers State Governor, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, has formally inaugurated the State Steering Committee on Peer Review Mechanism to ensure smooth compliance with the initiative.
Inaugurating the committee in Port Harcourt, the state Commissioner for Budget and Economic Planning, Hon. Gogo Levi Charles, who represented the governor at the even, said the exercise was in line with the resolution of the Nigerian Governors’ Forum to institute the committee that would assess the reports from the various ministries.
Charles Gogo, said the entire exercise was to enhance good governance, noting that the implementation in the state would be the responsibility of the committee.
According to him, “you are expected to see what the ministries are doing for the overall interest of the people of Rivers State”, pointing out that the Governors’ Forum intends to encourage exchange of ideas in governance, through the Peer Review Mechanism.
The commissioner explained that the choice of the committee’s chairman was informed by the need to have an unbiased report from the ministries, adding that the people would want to know what the Greater Port Harcourt City Development Authority was equally doing at all times.
He charged the committee to ensure that they prepare reports good enough for the Governors’ Forum/and directed ministries that have not forwarded theirs to do so to the Ministry of Budget, without delay.
In his acceptance speech, the chairman of the state Steering Committee on Peer Review Mechanism (SPRM), Rev. Father Stephen Deedua, said he accepted to service since it was to render service to the people of the state, and solicited the cooperation of all members to realize the objective of the initiative.
It would be recalled that the Nigerian Governors’ Forum last year held its first Peer Review Mechanism Stakeholders Conference in the state, and directed ministries to produce reports of their activities for onward assessment by the body before the next meeting.
