Abia Govt Revamps Two Water Schemes
The General Manager, Abia Water Board, Mr Felix Okonkwo, has said that two water schemes, comprising the low and high lifts at Umungwa and Umuokpara, have been rehabilitated by the State Government.
Okonkwo said in an interview with newsmen in Umuahia recently that the development would help to check the perennial water scarcity in Umuahia and its environs.
He said that the Umuokpara scheme, which was inaugurated about 30 years ago but later became dysfunctional, was revived by Gov. Theodore Orji.
He explained that the board had commenced the reticulation of water in the area, adding that the project would be completed by the end of the first quarter of 2013.
The general manager said that the removal and replacement of old pipes had reached advanced stage.
He said that water would be supplied from Umuokpara to the two-million litre capacity reservoir at Ugba for Umuahia and its environs.
Okonkwo explained that the state was one of the 12 states in the country selected by the European Union for its water reticulation project.
He said that representatives of the organisation would soon be in the state to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the government for the project.
