Don Blames Reading Culture Decline On Fallen Standard
A lecturer in the Department of English, University of Nigeria, Nsukka, has blamed the decline in the people’s reading culture for the fall in the standard of education.
Orabueze told newsmen in Nsukka, Enugu State, on Thursday that parents should cultivate the habit of buying novels and books for their children.
She berated parents who made a habit to buy home videos that prevented their children from reading their books and doing school assignments.
“Parents should ensure that they buy books for their children in addition to other things as birthday gifts.
“It is unfortunate that some students in secondary schools and tertiary institutions can narrate many home movies they have watched in one month and cannot even read one novel in a year.
“It’s this decline in reading books that is responsible for the massive failure by students in WAEC, NECO as well as JAMB examinations.
“Those lazy students that fail to read their books pay any amount to get the so-called miracle examination centres and cheat in examinations,” she said.
She urged the government to revive the reading culture among students by organising a competition in which books would be selected and students who win such competitions would be awarded scholarships.
“If nothing is done to stop this ugly trend, most of our graduates will continue to be unemployable as well as parade certificates they cannot defend.
“It is shameful that some students in secondary schools and tertiary institutions do not know how to construct simple correct sentences. The reason is that they did not read their books but spent time in watching films,” she said.
