Commissioner Tasks Parents On Children’s Upbringing
The Rivers State Commissioner for Education, Dame Alice Lawrence-Nemi, has called on parents not to leave the upbringing of their children and wards in the hands of teachers stressing that the teachers cannot handle the task alone.
Dame Alice Lawrence-Nemi, made the call while responding to the Association of Parents of Private School Students (APPSS) who paid her a courtesy visit in Port Harcourt.
The Commissioner said that the state government would continue to retrain teachers to meet up with the challenges of the modern day teaching.
According to her, government has succeeded in fulfilling its responsibility as entrenched in the Child Right Act.
She maintained that the state government has provided an enabling environment for academic excellence in both model primary and secondary schools, adding that every child is entitled to free education as the state has adopted compulsory education for every child resident in Rivers.
The Education Boss revealed that the Ministry of Education would make available the Child Right Act to every private school noting that passing the law in all the private schools would enable all stakeholders to know their responsibility in ensuring qualitative education for every child in Rivers State.
Earlier, in his speech the National President of APPSS, Dr. Ovy Chukwuma commended the Governor of Rivers State, Chibuike Amaechi for transforming the education sector adding that his administration has recorded an unprecedented milestone in the area of educational development.
Dr. Chukwuma explained that the education policies initiated by the state government have aided academic excellence while commending the ministry of education for introducing a culture and an order of change in the education sector.
The APPSS National President expressed the association’s readiness to partner with the ministry of education because of the importance it has placed on education.
He said the association is working towards lessening the financial burden of parents who have their children and ward in private schools.

The River State Commissioner for Education, Dr Peters Nwagor has called on media practitioners in Rivers State to deploy their various communication platforms toward promoting government programmes and policies aimed at achieving sustainable development in the education sector. Dr. Nwagor made the appeal when members of the Etche Ethnic Practicing Journalists (EEPJ) paid him a courtesy visit in Office in Port Harcourt. The Commissioner emphasized the strategic role of the media in shaping public perception, promoting government initiatives, and supporting policies capable of improving the quality of education and human capital development in the state.
