The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), has commended the Federal Government for ensuring that the Budget Monitoring and Implementation Committee set up to assess the needs of various universities was doing its work.
The ASUU chairman, Rivers State University of Science and Technology (RSUST), Nkpolu, Port Harcourt Chapter, Dr. Felix Igwe said in an interview in Port Harcourt that part of the federal government – ASUU, agreement was that the committee must come up with a comprehensive report that would indicate the peculiar needs of various universities so that funds can be disbursed according to their needs.
According to him, ASUU was satisfied that the federal government has reviewed the retirement age and the pesion law to accommodate those in the professorial cadre.
He described the situation as “work-in-progress” and acknowledged that the budget monitoring and implementation committee visited the RSUST.
In his words: “June is gone and we are awaiting the report because the report would be made available to all the universities so that the funds can be disbursed. The agreement was due for review in June.”
He explained that the needs assessment committee has not been set up in RSUST and appealed that the university should set up the local budget monitoring committees which would receive and monitor the funds, especially now that the federal government has started making moves to inject more funds into the educational sector.
