Cleric Urges NASS To Consider SNC
The Archbishop of Bendel Province, Anglican Communion Most Rev. Friday Imaekhai, on Tuesday urged the National Assembly to consider the merits of the Sovereign National Conference (SNC).
Imaekhai made the call on Tuesday in Irrua, Edo while delivering an address at the first session of the Fourth Synod of Esan Diocese.
The theme of the synod is: “God, Our Banner: A Divine Assurance for a Nation in Distress”.
The cleric advised the National Assembly to be alive to its responsibilities as the elected representatives of the people and discuss the national questions in the interest of national unity.
He said that the methodology of the discussion should be such that the public would be invited to send memoranda on all contentious issues relating to the coexistence of the people as one indivisible entity.
“If the National Assembly is unable to perform the assignment then, there should be convocation of a Sovereign National Conference that will comprise representatives from the six-geopolitical zones.’’
He said that such delegates should be appointed by the National Assembly with a presidential assent to discuss the structure of the country.
On the current insecurity in the country, the clergyman called on government to rise up to the occasion and deal with the forces threatening the security of the nation.
The bishop advised the Federal Government to do a thorough research on Boko Haram phenomenon and other terrorist groups and equip security agencies with the necessary capacity demanded by the situation.
Imaekhai called on the government to create a viable economy that would attract private investors in all spheres of economic activities.
He appealed to the Federal Government to “address the paradox of poverty in the midst of a richly endowed country.’’
