RSG, PHALGA Collaborate On Cold Room
The Rivers State Government is partnering with Port Harcourt City Local Government Area to build a modern cold room in Port Harcourt.
The Special Adviser to the Governor of Acqaculture and Deep Sea Fishing, Hon Kurotamunoye Briggs, emphasised the need for a shift from oil to the development of agriculture and deep sea fishing in the state to provide employment and generate economic benefit.
Speaking during a courtesy call on the Mayor of Port Harcourt, Hon Chimbiko Akarolo, Thursday, Hon Briggs appealed to the PHALGA chairman to provide land to enable the government execute the project in collaboration with the private sector.
According to him, the cold room which would be 2000 cubic centimeter capacity, the project would bring about proper storage of fish and other sea foods which are presently carried out in unhygienic conditions that constitute health hazards.
He noted that Port Harcourt has the highest concentration of people in the state and so it has become necessary that such facility is provided to safeguard the health of the populace.
Responding, the Mayor thanked the special adviser for coming, stressing that the visit was timely owing to the need to diversify the economy and health of the people.
The Mayor noted that through investigation, he found out that the new layout market had no provision for cold room facility.
On sensitizing the people to beware of putrid fish, other sea foods and lassa fever, Hon Akaralo said text messages would soon be sent concerning these diseases and where help can be received in the case of infection.
