Court Fines Landlord For Violating Environmental Laws
An Ikorodu Customary Court in Lagos last Tuesday fined a landlord N10,000 for infringing the state’s environmental laws.
The landlord, Uthman Lawal, 29, owner of the property on 18, Lawal St., Ikorodu, had pleaded guilty to the two-court charge of failure to repair his dilapidated pit latrines and waste pipes.
The Sanitation Unit of the Ikorodu Local Council docked Lawal for contravening Section 16 of the Lagos State Environmental Laws, 2002 and Section 18 (1) of the Ikorodu Local Government Sanitation Department, Laws of Lagos State 2002.
“My father is late and our family members are not around”, Lawal told the court.
The council’s Sanitation Officer told the court that any person guilty of the offences was liable to pay a fine of N5,000 for each of the counts.
In her judgment, the Court President, Alhaji Risikat Adesanya, ordered the convict to repair the damaged items within one month and also pay a fine of N10,000 before leaving the court.
