Union Seeks Closure Of Illegal Parks
The Plateau chapter of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), has asked the state government to close all illegal motor parks.
“Such illegal parks are a threat to security and should be shut down,” Mr Adamu Musa, the Auditor of the chapter, last Thursday in Jos. That the call has become inevitable to ensure the safety of lives and property of passengers.
“We’ve been trying to sanitise the parks to safeguard our passengers; the proliferation of such parks has been a threat over time and we must put heads together to avoid the unknown.”
Musa said that it was easier to “monitor genuine NURTW members and pick out strange persons in the approved parks.
“We have our own security personnel who ensure that anything that comes into the parks is checked; we also record the movement of vehicles and their destinations at all times.”
The NURTW official cautioned passengers against boarding vehicles by the roadsides because such action could be dangerous.
He noted that some members might be affected by the closure of such parks, but said that the measure was a sacrifice as the union would not allow the continued operation of the illegal parks at the expense of security.
The union official said that transport fares on intra and inter-city routes in the state had not been increased “arbitrarily” in
spite of the upward review in the price of petrol.
He considered the fares as being “very moderate”.
