SON Mobilises To Check Fake Goods
The Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON), says it plans to reduce the number of sub-standard products in Nigerian markets from its current 70 per cent to 30 per cent before the end of 2012.
Speaking to newsmen in Abuja last Sunday, Dr Joseph Odumodu, SON’s Director-General said at present 70 per cent of consumer products in Nigeria were sub-standard, compared to 85 per cent in 2011.
“This year, our target is to reduce that further by half, which then means that by the end of this year, we should be looking at about 30 per cent and we have already lined up programmes to ensure that happens.”
Odumodu said that 80 per cent of consumer products imported into the country were mainly from Asian countries.
He blamed the influx of some of these sub-standard products for the “death’’ and non-performance of many indigenous companies, which couldn’t compete favourably with products dumped on Nigeria.
Odumodu said ensuring good quality of products coming into Nigeria remained a main priority for the agency, which he began to head one year ago.
“To be able to achieve that, we need to have accredited laboratories, but today we can’t boast of such internationally-recognised laboratories in Nigeria.
“But we have already started on that journey and within this year, we are going to certify some of our laboratories in Nigeria.”
Our correspondent reports that SON currently operates a textile/leather laboratory in Kaduna, a science laboratory in Lagos while its Enugu facility hosts its engineering laboratory.
The director-general said SON had put in motion processes to ensure that all products imported into Nigeria were tested and certified to be of good quality.
Under the new SON’s Conformity Assessment Programme (SONCAP), Odumodu said manufacturers abroad who were making products destined for Nigeria would be profiled.
“Before now we have given that job (profiling) to our Programme Management Companies (PMC) but from now on, we want to take that responsibility by ourselves.
“We have created an IT gateway, which will now house information on all manufacturers who want to export goods to Nigeria.”
