Subsidy: Lawyer Sues For Understanding
A Calabar based Legal Practitioner, Mr Ogar Egodo, has called for caution over the removal of oil subsidy by the Federal Government, appealing to Nigerians to show understanding.
Egodo told newsmen in Calabar on Thursday that Nigerians would soon adjust to the situation hence the need to give government a chance.
He said, “I know we will adjust to the pains pretty soon; it is a sacrifice we have to make. But let us give the president the benefit of the doubt and see how it’s going to go.” Egodo said that violent protests against the policy were not the solution, but would only worsen the situation, and the effect would be borne by the common man. “Someone has been killed and others injured, while some property have been burnt; all these affects us as a people not them.”
He called on Nigerians to adopt a “deaf man approach” in the current situation, adding that such approach would affect the psychology of the government the more. He, however, said that both the state and the federal governments needed to have exhausted all debates and deliberations on the matter before removing the subsidy. “The people should have been sufficiently briefed on the merits and demerits of the policy before finally removing the subsidy,” he said. Egodo said that governance was a social contract, which entailed extensive dialogue.
“You give somebody the mandate to rule you, so it behooves on the person to come back and explain how this policy is going to affect you,” he said.
He said that Nigerians should pray to God for continued sustenance in the current situation and avoid anything that would over heat the polity.
