Group Backs Subsidy Removal
A women group, “Association of Market Women and Men in Nigeria” (AMWNA) has pledged support to the federal government fuel subsidy removal.
The group made their position known during a peaceful protest to Government House on Wednesday.
The group was led by its State President, Mrs Charity Abonye, with many of them bearing placards with inscriptions “Subsidy Removal Will Open Many Doors”, Market Women Go Support Government Subsidy Removal” among others, said the policy was in the best interest of the country and enjoined the womenfolk to support the presidency towards ensuring that it succeeds.
Abonye condemned labour and civil society protest against the policy and urged them to follow dialogue to press home their demands. “Labour action is not in the best interest of the country. We believe the President means well. He has introduced a policy that all of us will benefit and not for a few people”.
The AMWNA chairperson also condemned the religious killings in the northern part of the country and urged labour and civil society groups to raise their voice against such violence instead of opposing government well-intentioned policy.
Addressing the women, Governor Chibuike Amaechi speaking through the Commissioner for Women Affairs, Mrs Joeba West commended the group for making their views public.
Meanwhile, a Christian group known as Christian Prayer Network for a Better Nigeria (CPN) has disclosed plans to organise a sensitization programme on the fuel subsidy removal.
President of the Christian group, Evangelist Godwin Ekeke said the campaign has become necessary because of the heat it has generated in the polity.
He argued that President Jonathan meant well for the country over the policy, “Goodluck Jonathan is divinely elected to rescue this country”, “so whatever decision he is taking is for the good of all,” Okeke said .
Also, the Secretary of CPN for Better Nigeria, Theophilus Opuku charged all Christians to pray for the presidency, “all Christians should move away from the streets and go to their churches and pray for the president and the country”.
