Cleric Faults Subsidy Removal
A cleric, Monsrsignor Cletus Gotan, Parish Priest of the Church of Immaculate Conception at Zaramaganda in Jos, has said that the timing for the latest removal of oil subsidy was wrong, in view of current security challenges in the country.
Gotan who made the announcement at a Holy Mass on Sunday said that the Federal Government should have postponed the removal of subsidy until it had addressed the security challenges in the country.
He also said that government should have allowed people to return from the Christmas and New year holidays before the withdrawal, so that they would prepare their minds for the challenges.
“Some of the church staff amongst many other Nigerians have not returned to their duty posts. When I called my staff they told me that they do not have transport fare to come back.
“The timing is not correct but we must not allow the anger and rage to cause more trouble for the already volatile security situation in the country.”
He advised the NLC, TUC and other civil society groups who would be participating in the nationwide protests against the removal of fuel subsidy, to go about it in a civil manner.
The cleric said: “evil doers” might hijack the protests to cause more grief to the people.
Gotan called on Christians not to retaliate the dastardly attacks inflicted on them by hoodlums, saying that such would give them the satisfaction of causing chaos and war in the country.
“I want those killing our people to know that nobody has monopoly of violence, it is a matter of decision.’’
Gotan described the Boko Haram threat that Christians and Sourtherners should leave the North as an absolute non sense, saying that God knows why he created us the way we are.
“No part of the country can live without the support and contribution of the other. It is an insult on God for some people to think that they don’t need others in their place.’’
The cleric assured the congregation that the saviour, Jesus Christ, would surely bring the light that would clear the darkness that had covered Nigeria at the moment.
“He will proffer a solution to the chaos and confusion in the country. We need to pray to him to give our leaders the wisdom and courage to discover the source of challenges and tackle them for the good of the country and its people.’’
