Educationist Identifies Cause Of Poor Standard
An educationist with the Bayelsa State Ministry of Education, Dr Emily Mieyefa, has attributed the fallen standard of education to wrong choice of career, saying that only effective counselling and guidiance of prospective students would remedy the situation and also improve candidates performance in examinations.
Dr Mieyefa who spoke to journalists, after emerging the state chairman of Counselling and Guidiance Association of Nigeria (CASSON), pointing out that in educational settings, this sector had not been giving adequate attention, the results being poor performances of students both in internal and external examinations.
The remedy in this regards, Dr Mieyefa said is for government to employ and deployed qualified professional counselling and guidiance in all secondary schools in line with Section 11 of the National Education Policy.
Towords this end, she said the association in she is the need head has decide to take proactive actions to salvage the situation through liasing with government and corporate organisations to organise regular seminars and workshops for school counsellors for them to function effectively.
Adviced government on need to ensure posting of at least one counsellor to each school to take care of students’ psychological, educational, vocational, social and personal problems and to ensure that there is cordial relationship between students and their school heads.
She therefore pleaded with the relevant authorities to give serious thoughts to their subjection so to save the future generations of our youths from taking up wrong careers that would later lead them to fustration and dumping of their academic pursuits.
Meanwhile, an eight-member executive of the association headed by Dr (Mrs) Emily Mieyefa has been elected to run its affairs. Other members includes Chief Ogon Ogbemuchia, Secretary, Barnabas Tonila, Assistant Secretary, Mrs Terry Joe, treasurer, Deacon Sambo Oyambo, Financial Secretary, Felicia Tawari, Public Relations Officer, Mrs Amaebi Obiri, Provost, Mrs Becky Zuokumor, Organising Secretary and Mrs Clementina Tambo as Welfare Officer.
