Amaechi Urges Speedy Work On Old PH Township Rehabilitation
Rivers State Governor, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Amaechi, has directed contractors handling rehabilitation work within the Old Port Harcourt Township to step up work to reduce traffic and flooding problems faced by residents of the area.
Amaechi, during an inspection of various ongoing projects in the area, Monday tasked the contractors handling the projects to increase the pace of work to ensure timely completion.
Attributing the slow pace of work to poor manpower at the sites, Governor Amaechi said, “they have no business using five to ten men on site since we have paid them; we are not owing them, so we expect them to work to deliver at target time.”
He, however, expressed satisfaction with the quality of work done by the contractors on the drains linking major streets like Niger, Bonny and Bende Streets.
Meanwhile, Governor Amaechi has assured of plans to rehabilitate all the roads in the Old Port Harcourt Township with construction of covered drains which would be channelled to empty into the creek.
“There are no drainages; if there were, they were very small and the volume of water was higher than the drains. So, what we are doing now is to build appropriate covered drains that are inter-linked and connect them to a storm drain that will take the water away to the creek,” Amaechi stated.
As part of the inspection exercise, the Governor also visited number two and number five playing grounds, including the new cultural centre at Niger Street where he directed the contractor to return to site immediately to ensure completion of the project by June next year.
Other projects visited include the Obiri Ikwerre, East-West Road flyover/interchange, Ozuoba/Ogbogoro Road among others.
