ASUP Wants Internal Rector For Rivpoly
Ahead of the end of the tenure and retirement of the Rector of Rivers State Polytechnic, Bori, Prof T.G.Sokari, the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) of Rivpoly is already demanding the appointment of a new rector for the institution.
The tenure of the incumbent Rector, Prof Sokari is expected to terminate in about two months time preparatory to his retirement from service.
By this development, the academic community of Rivpoly is witnessing intense activities of lobbyists networking to ensure that Rivpoly was not shortchanged in the appointment of the new rector of the institution.
But Rivpoly ASUP chairman, Comrade G.M.Good, says the union is resolute that Rivpoly should produce the new rector since it has qualified personnel in its rank to occupy the position as against imposing helmsman from other institutions.
In an interview with newsmen at Bori, Comrade Good, said ‘time is up for those appointed from other institutions to head Rivpoly as rector, while the institution has those that are equally qualified to handle the position”.
According to him, the stage is set for a battle among several interest groups including ASUP in ensuring the actualization of a rector from within.
Though, the appointment of a new rector for the institution may not be an easy task, Comrade Good believed that an ‘internal rector” was ideal for Rivpoly since, according to him, the person understands the problems and prospects of fostering development in the school than those appointed from outside Rivpoly.
“We are not confronting the authorities vested with the power to appoint a rector. Our duty, as stakeholders, it to point out what can move our polytechnic forward in accordance with the law, and we are hopeful that those concerned will listen to us to achieve result, the ASUP boss said.
While appealing to the Governor of Rivers State to encourage the appointment of a rector from its academic fold, other than impose personnel from other institutions, Comrade Good noted that ‘all except one among the five rectors that have served in the polytechnic so far performed below expectations due to their lack of knowledge of a polytechnic culture.
When The Tide visited Bori Polytechnic, there was high tension among the lecturers and non-academic staff as to where the pendulum for the rectorship would swing. But they agreed that Governor Amaechi, has the final say in the appointment of the institution’s helmsman.
Those who spoke to The Tide pleaded anonymity, but said they are ‘watching developments before real action would follow.” But they did not explain what they meant by real action”.
