IGP Disbands Bayelsa Security Outfit …As Citizens Kick Against Kill And Throw Away Gang
Bayelsa State internal security outfit code named Operation Famou Tangbei (kill and throw away) may have been disbanded on the orders of the Inspector-General of Police, Mr Hafiz Ringim.
The order to disband the dreaded security outfit whose mode of operations has drawn disdain from residents of the state, was said to have been received by the state police command last Wednesday.
The special police squad was established and funded by the state government to check the rate of crimes in the state ,but observers believed that it was an instrument to checkmate opponents of the Peoples’s Democratic Party (PDP) led administration in the state.
Although, most residents believed that the outfit has considerably reduced crimes in the state, its activities are questioned especially by the civil society groups over series of unexplained extra-judicial killings of suspects.
It was also alleged that the outfit was effectively used to intimidate and harass members of the opposition political parties during the April general elections in the state.
However, petitions against operation Famou Tangbei have been flooding the Police Headquarters, Abuja, a situation that might have led to the disbandment.
