Mark Urges Respect For Arms Of Government
Senate President David
Mark says it is mutual respect for the three arms of government that will ensure an enduring democracy in the country.
Mark made the observation on the occasion of the inauguration of the administrative building of the Cross River State House of Assembly in Calabar.
He said the mutual respect between the executive and the legislature had ensured the provision of the dividend of democracy to the people.
Mark said that people did not understand how much effort the legislators put in legislative and law making process but at the end of the day, “we are criticised’’.
He said that in matured democracies people understood the importance of the legislature because “the legislature is an engine house of democracy’’.
Mark commended Governor Liyel Imoke of Cross River for providing a benefiting office and conducive environment where legislators could begin to do serious work.
Earlier in his address Gov. Imoke had said that the legislature was one arm that had suffered greatly from external incursion into democracy.
“The legislature has suffered adverse consequences and there is clearly need to appreciate the role of this arm of government in governance,’’ he said.
Imoke said that for the past 12 years, Cross River House of Assembly did not have adequate facility to enable it function optimally.
“If we must sustain this democracy and understand the important of the legislature, we need clearly not just infrastructure and facility but also strong resources and capacity,’’ he said.
The governor said the facility would reflect the stability of democracy and was significant for the people of Cross River.
He said that in spite of the challenges faced by the Cross River State Assembly, it had passed more bills than any other state assembly in the country.
In his remark, Hon. Larry Odey, Speaker of the Assembly, said the event marked an end to the era where honourable members converted their cars to offices and used car parks as meeting venues.
He promised that the members would continue to collaborate with the state government to pass more bills.
