FG Re-Strategises To Empower Female Farmers
The Federal Government is set to empower women farmers as part of its new strategy to facilitate the development of the agricultural sector.
Dr Akinwunmi Adesina, the new Minister of Agriculture, who announced this yesterday in Abuja in an interview with our correspondent said the measure had become imperative, because women accounted for 80 per cent of the country’s labour force.
He observed that although women produced more than 55 per cent of the food crops in the country, they lacked sufficient access to farm implements to boost their productivity. Adesina said government’s decision to boost women farmers’ involvement in agriculture was premised on the fact that the sector remained the mainstay of the nation’s economy.
He said government had a lot of incentives for women under the agricultural programme
to make them farm with ease and enhance their productivity.
The minister added that government would invest in infrastructure in rural areas through the creation of “remunerative economic opportunities,” for more women to engage in agriculture.
He promised that government would also look into the problems of farmers generally with a view to ensuring that they h’ad more access to farm inputs, such as seeds and fertiliser. Adesina said efforts would be intensified to accelerate the pace of improvement in domestic production of crops and processing to ensure food security. He said government was worried about post harvest losses, stressing that Nigerian farmers could not continue to sell with tears, but must reap the dividends of farming.
“We will produce storage facilities, revamp the sector and accelerate farmers’ activities in a clear and visible manner that will impact their lives and restore the nation’s lost glory in agriculture.”

FG, Ogun Distribute Inputs To 2,400 Farmers
Federal Government and the Ogun State Government, on Wednesday, distributed farm inputs to farmers as part of effort to address food security challenge.
The State Director, Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, Dr. Toyin Ayo-Ajayi, during the flag-off ceremony of Inputs Redemption Under The National Agricultural Growth Scheme-Agro Pocket (NAGS-AP), in Ogun State, disclosed that beneficiaries of the gesture were primarily rice, maize and cassava farmers across the State.
Ayo-Ajayi commended the Ogun State Government for partnering with the government at the centre for the effort in supporting farmers with inputs that would bring about yieldings for local consumption and likely exportation.
She noted that government is supporting rice, cassava and maize farmers with inputs worth N212,000; N189,000 and N186,000 respectively.
The Permanent Secretary in the State Ministry of Agriculture, Mrs Kehinde Jokotoye, who represented the Commissioner in the Ministry, Bolu Owotomo, stated that traditional farmers are critical in food production, hence the need to encourage and support them with inputs that would bring about desired results during harvesting.
Owotomo said: “Let us make good use of this opportunity, so that the success of this phase will make farmers benefit more from the state and federal governments of Nigeria.”
Earlier, State Coordinator, Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, Dr. Oluwatoyin Ayo-Ajayi, appreciated the present administration for partnering with the federal government for the initiative, adding that the programme is designed to support farmers at the grassroots level in cassava, rice and maize with inputs such as, seeds, pesticides, herbicides and fertilizers, to boost their production and enhance their livelihood.
