Rivers Engages 4000 Volunteers
The Local Organising Committee (LOC) of the National Sports Festival, tagged Garden City Games 2011, holding in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital says about 4000 persons have been engaged as volunters to ensure a smooth festival.
Chairman of the LOC and Deputy Governor of Rivers State, Engr. Tele Ikuru told newsmen during a press briefing at the Rivers State Council of NUJ Secretariat in Port Harcourt, that the enormity of the event requires more volunteers.
He dispelled rumours that the number of volunteers had been slashed. “Rather than pruning down the number of volunteers, the services of about 4000 volunteers have already been engaged to meet the challenges involved”, he said. The LOC chairman pointed out that more volunteers were required to cater for the welfare of the over 16,000 athletes and officials coming for the festival. Describing the Garden City Games as a model for sports development and national integration, Ikuru said the right facilities have been put in place.
On the welfare of the participants, he said, 100 caterers had been engaged to take care of their feeding, while over 100 medical doctors and other medical personnel are available to cater for the health needs of the participants. He also disclosed that more than 14 ambulances have been provided to evacuate people in cases of emergency, while good accommodation and conveniences have also been provided for all the athletes.
