Rivers Sets Agenda For In-Coming LG Chairmen
Rivers State Governor, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, has called on local government council chairmen in the state to adopt a proactive method in rural administration with a bottom-top approach to ensure that benefits of democracy get to the grassroots.
Governor Amaechi, who was speaking to newsmen shortly after casting his ballot during last Saturday local government council elections in the state at Ward eight, Unit 14, Omuigwe VilIage Square, in his Ubima community, said the bottom-top approach would require dialogue with the communities.
He opined that the interactive session with the communities would help to prioritise projects for the various areas, for maximum utilisation, stressing that deciding projects to be sited in communities without involving the people had often led to waste of resources.
The governor reaffirmed the readiness of his administration to synergise efforts with the local government councils to identify specific needs of the various communities before embarking on projects, to ensure that resources deployed to such infrastructural facilities produces desirable benefits.
According to him, “the state government has taken over some of the responsibilities of local government councils in the areas of education and healthcare delivery”., He emphasised that the councils lacked necessary institutional frameworks to handle the needs of the people at the primary level because of the delay in the system.
He described the turn-out of voters during the elections as impressive, and commended the organisers of the council polls, RSIEC for a good showing when compared to the 2008 elections.
On the alleged boycotting out of the elections by the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), the governor said he was not aware of it, neither the court injunction.
Earlier, a man who gave his name as Mr Nna Wali, had presented a bunch of plantain to Governor Amaechi, for onward delivery to the wife, Dame Judith.
