The Problem Of Drug Trafficking
Drug trafficking is one of the very serious problems of Nigeria. Almost weekly cases of drug trafficking are reported in the country with no sign of abating. This is very disturbing indeed for the country. When some decent citizens are fighting hard to bring good image to their fatherland, others are busy painting the country black with their evil deeds. They should be condemned by all those who wish this country well. Any good citizen of this country should look for a legitimate means of livelihood instead of indulging in criminal activities that will bring down Nigeria in the opinion of reasonable persons.
In the meantime, officials of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency have arrested a suspected Nigerian drug trafficker who disguised as an Ivorian. The suspect, Anayo Odumegwu, was arrested at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Lagos, with Thailand Cocaine. The false name on his passport was AHa Kouassi Alphonse. Speaking in this connection, the NDLEA Airport Commander, Hamza Umar said the cocaine trafficker concealed his identity. He revealed that, he was a Nigerian from Ihiala, Anambra State, but was caught with Cote D’ Ivoire international passport. And the name on the passport was Alla Kouassi Alphonse. The suspect is believed to be a professional drug trafficker with established contact in Thailand and China. Odumegwu was arrested after testing positive to drug ingestion on Saturday, November 27, 2010, during inward screening of Emirate passengers from Philippines. According to the Drug Law Enforcement Agency, this is the first time a passenger coming from the Philippines will be arrested with drugs at the Lagos airport. Chairman of the Agency Ahmadu Giade described the arrest as a warning to drug traffickers. He stressed that the Agency was adequately prepared to apprehend drug traffickers and seize their drugs.
However, the trafficker confessed to ingesting sixty pieces of cocaine. Ten thousand United States dollars cash suspected to be illicit drug proceeds was also recovered from him. He lived in China between 2002 and 2006 before relocating to Manila, Republic of Philippines. In his statement, the suspect said, he was under financial pressure as the breadwinner of his extended family. He further said that his father had died and the family looked up to him for their upkeep. He added that he felt very bad now.
As already observed, Mr Odumegwu is one of the Nigerians bringing bad name to Nigeria with their criminal activities all over the world. The only reason he gave for his condemnable drug trafficking was that his father was no more and the family looked up to him for their upkeep. He should realise that a good and patriotic citizen cannot be pushed to criminal activities simply because his father had died. He ought to have looked for a legitimate career for a means of livelihood no matter the ugly pressure from criminal quarters. That he toed the criminal line means that he has criminal inclination. The law should therefore take its course in this regard. A country with global criminals cannot be respected by the world community. Nigeria ought to be respected.
Earlier, it was reported that the Drug Law Enforcement Agency arrested 2, 883 drug traffickers in the country between January and May, 2010. The NDLEA reported this as part of the activities to commemorate the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking which holds on June 26 of every year. According to the NDLEA the arrests are made up of 2, 780 males and 103 females. While 77,796.12 kilogrammes of narcotic drugs were seized from the drug dealers in the period under review. Speaking on the occasion, the Director General of the NDLEA, Mr Otumba Lanre Ipinmisho said the Agency would continue to collaborate with stakeholders in the war against narcotics. This year’s theme was “Think Health Not Drugs”. The theme was chosen to draw attention to the devastating consequences of drug abuse and illicit trafficking on health.
Indeed, illicit drug traffickers should note the ill consequences of their criminal activities on the health of those who patronise them. Narcotics have been found to be dangerous to the human body and therefore should be discouraged. Those who make money through the sale of poisonous drugs to their fellow human beings should search their conscience and stop the illegal activity. In any case, all those caught in this business should be made to face the wrath of the law.
In a similar development, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency smashed an international drug syndicate that smuggles cocaine from South America to West Africa. About 450,400 kilogrammes of cocaine was confiscated from the syndicate at Tin Can Port, Lagos. The drugs were imported from Chile. They were estimated at more than four billion naira. According to reports, the seizure was the second largest ever in this country. Some suspected members of the syndicate including two Chinese were arrested. A Nigerian clearing agent was arrested too. In his remarks, the NDLEA Chairman, Alhaji Ahmadu Giade described the seizure as a major breakthrough in the country’s efforts to eliminate narcotics. He pointed out that the entire operation was intelligence based and executed professionally. He stressed that the quantity was frightening and the street value painted a horrendous picture of the illicit drug trade.
However, drug trafficking is an illegal business. All those involved in it, particularly Nigerians, should stop the illicit peddling of drugs. Those engaged in it only bring bad mage to this country. We should all stop committing crime so that Nigeria can move forward.
