NYSC Coordinator Seeks Additional Infrastructure In Orientation Camp
The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Coordinator in Delta State, Mr Kanayo Chris-Mgbemena, has appealed to the state government to provide additional infrastructure at the permanent orientation camp at Issele-Uku.
Chris-Mgbemena made the appeal in an interview with the newsmen in Asaba.
The coordinator said that facilities for proper health care, good water and hostel accommodation were lacking at the camp.
Chris-Mgbemena said that the inadequacies had accounted for frequent cases of illnesses among youth corps members at the camp.
He said that availability of good water was a major challenge to the scheme, adding that there had never been enough water for people at the camp in spite of efforts to ensure its regular supply.
“If we have these facilities in place, the rate at which illnesses of corps members are being reported would have been stemmed,” he said.
Chris-Mgbemena also said that the camp lacked enough hostels for the increasing number of corps members being posted to the state, adding that its hall is too small.
Besides, he said that the hall had not been completed, adding that corps members using the hall were usually wet when it rained.
“Our hall at the orientation camp is far from being a hall; only pillars are at present holding the structure.
“It has no walls and so when it rains, our corps members get wet,’’ he decried.
The NYSC chief therefore, appealed to the state government to address the inadequacies at the camp, saying that improved infrastructure would also aid in the development of the area.
He particularly urged the government to provide a water borehole at the camp to prevent the outbreak of water-borne diseases, adding that availability of potable water would boost the morale of corps members while in camp.
Chris-Mgbemena said, however, that the current structures at the camp were provided in line with requirements at a certain time but that the projection for such provision had been eroded by many factors.
The coordinator also appealed to local government council chairmen as well as host communities of corps members to see them (corps members) as their children.
Chris-Mgbemena reminded the communities and council chairmen that some corps members had never lived outside their states “and therefore, need all assistance and encouragement from their hosts”.
He also advised corps members to see people in their areas of deployment as members of their families.
