Ihejirika Tasks Army On Internal Security
Lt-Gen. Onyeabo Ihejirika, the Chief of Army Staff, has tasked the Army to brace up to the internal security challenges currently confronting the country.
Ihejirika, who is on tour of military formations under 3 Armoured Division, spoke in Jos on Wednesday during a courtesy call on Plateau Governor Jonah Jang.
“My visit is to impress my vision on officers and men of the Nigerian Army and to assess their operational readiness to meet the present challenges and realities”.
“I intend to transform the Army to a force that is better able to meet the transformational challenges; the greatest challenge facing us now is more of internal security than external aggression.
“Our training now will be geared towards assisting civil authority to maintain security, while not overlooking the challenge of defending our territorial integrity,” he said.
The Army chief said that soldiers were in Jos to assist the people achieve peace and development and expressed happiness that peace had returned to the once troubled city.
He challenged leaders to take necessary pro-active security measures to nip crises in the bud rather than wait to adopt ad hoc approaches to deal with situations.
Ihejirika said that Army personnel would be trained on attitudinal change to improve their civil relations and subordination to civil authority.
Ihejirika had earlier condoled Jang over the death of his elder sister, Ngo Rebecca Dung-Dasso, on Monday.
Responding, Jang said that Ihejirika did not become the Army Chief because he was an Igboman but because he had worked hard to deserve it and urged Nigerians to shun sentiments.
“The Nigerian Army has achieved a lot nationally and internationally to make Nigeria proud but it should be equipped to meet the needs of modern warfare in technology,” he said.
Jang commended the cordial working relationship between the Army, other security agencies and the Plateau government in maintaining peace and security since the sectarian Jos crises.
